Ultimate 14-Day South Island Road Trip Itinerary
The South Island of New Zealand (*Te Waipounamu*) is legendary for good reason. From turquoise glacier-fed lakes to towering alpine peaks, driving through this landscape is one of the world's greatest road trip adventures.
Days 1–3: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo & Aoraki / Mount Cook
Begin your journey in Christchurch before heading inland across the Canterbury Plains. As you approach Lake Tekapo, the brilliant turquoise color of the water will take your breath away. Don't miss the Church of the Good Shepherd, but be sure to respect local parking guidelines.
Continue towards Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. We highly recommend hiking the Hooker Valley Track—an easy 3-hour return walk taking you over suspension bridges right to the terminal glacial lake.
Days 4–7: Wanaka & Queenstown Adventure Hub
Cross the scenic Lindis Pass into Wanaka. Climb Roy's Peak early morning or enjoy a peaceful stroll around the lakefront. Queenstown is just an hour away via the Crown Range Road—New Zealand's highest paved highway.
"Travel Tip: Always check mountain pass weather conditions before driving the Crown Range during shoulder seasons."
Days 8–11: Fiordland National Park & Milford Sound
Head south to Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland. Take a morning cruise on Milford Sound to witness Sterling Falls cascading down sheer rock faces. If time permits, consider an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound for true serenity.
Days 12–14: West Coast Glaciers to Christchurch
Drive up the rugged West Coast highway towards Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Finish your loop by riding the famous TranzAlpine train route back across Arthur's Pass to Christchurch.
